“You brag so women don’t have to.“
That was Renu Bawa’s response as we chatted about PowHERhouse and our role as a women’s media organization to mobilize Canadian women during a lunch at the amazing Brentwood Bay Spa & Resort where I recently delivered a talk on leadership and self-care.
It’s absolutely true. Over the past four years, we have built an extensive media platform for Canadian women. We brag for them so they don’t have to. Most women aren’t completely comfortable talking about themselves.
This is a key catalyst for our creation of SPEAK! Canada, our blended learning program that encourages women to communicate with greater confidence, clarity, and conciseness any day, any stage.
The underlying premise of PowHERhouse is simple: “If she can do it, then I can too!” Positive role models demonstrate what is possible. Through our Aptitude, Attitude + Appetite, we then ground this inspiration into our own lives with intentional Action, ie. I see that. I want it too. Now what?
Aptitude | Natural ability or skill.
What is your Super Power? Is your unique Super Power 100% clear to you? Can you easily communicate it to others? It’s not easy, and most women really struggle with this. Often times, others recognize our aptitudes before we fully recognize and appreciate them in ourselves.
Recognition and celebration is something that I’m great at! You could say it is my aptitude; ‘Digging deep to differentiate‘. We were taught that it’s not polite to brag about ourselves. Unfortunately, this misunderstood piece of politeness has resulted in understated, underutilized, and unfulfilled women.
Why is this so important?
3 words: Positive Role Models. Who are we celebrating? What are we role-modeling to those observing us? We lead most powHERfully through our actions. Often the role of media has been misused to sell to women, glam-i-fy and glorify those unworthy of role model status, and send a message to women over and over again about what is needed to achieve happiness and ultimate fulfillment. Enough.
Attitude | A way of behaving that expresses what one is thinking.
Our ability to behave or take action expresses or communicates to the world what we are thinking and what we are ready for.
We’ve all heard Ghandi’s quote,”… Your words become your actions…” My gift is to ensure women do take action. PowHERhouse mobilizes – even baby steps – at whatever level you are ready to take.
The challenge that I have with the women’s empowerment movement is this, “Are we empowering to mobilize?” “Are we providing access to the opportunities needed for this to happen?” We must take empowerment to that next step in order to move women forward, faster. Together.
That comes through access. And opportunities are accessed by knowing our ASK – what we want, what we need, what we’re ready for.
Appetite | A desire or wish.
Question: What is your appetite for risk?
Women desire to hit a level of greatness, and they are fully equipped to do so. In fact, they were born fully equipped. Their potential sits, patiently waiting to be fully utilized. Many have forgotten. Most continue to play small, risk-adverse and confused by a desire for ease, flow, balance and self-care seemingly contradictory to achieving greatness.
PowHERhouse demonstrates over and over and over again that life doesn’t need to be an either/or. It can be a both. Our underlying premise, “If she can do it, then I can too” is brought to life through the powerful stories we share of Canadian women making an impact in sport, business, the arts and community leadership. Yes, in short – we brag.
These women know what they want, and what they are here to do. They know the ACTION they are ready to take – however large or small – and aren’t afraid to ASK in order to ACCESS to what they most need to mobilize.
Next steps are taken with efficiency and effectiveness through collaboration and collective action.
And so the ripple of impact continues with ease, flow, balance and self-care as we remember our own true greatness and aren’t afraid to brag about it.by
