BE EPIC | 4 Steps to Turn Up Your EPIC!

Possibility.  Potential.  Power.

Most women operate at a fraction of their full potential.  How do we change this?  Why do we need to?  That’s what I want to explore deeper…

EPIC stands for “Exceptional PowHERhouses in Canada”.  Now more than ever before, the world needs us.  ALL of us!  The very best version of ourselves, operating at our highest potential.  Don’t believe me?  Look around.  Turn on the news.  Wake-up!

So what does Being EPIC look like? What does it feel like?  PowHERhouse demonstrates this for you.  Through the women we profile and interview to those we bring to the stage.  And today, we’re going to walk through the 4 Steps to Turn Up Your EPIC!

Where did this all begin for me?

Let’s back up a step.  I was born to a young First Nations girl.  My birth mom was 15 years old when I was born – just 15 – and she put me up for adoption shortly thereafter.  I was spared from the foster care system – a system that has failed so many children, especially Indigenous children.  I never take my humble beginnings for granted.  In fact, they drive me to do what I do every single day.

I grew up with four older brothers and few male cousins.  I learned from a young age – “If you want to play with the big boys, you’d better keep up.” And so I did.

This attitude carried me through my schooling to my professional career where again I found myself ‘playing with the big boys’ at an investment firm where I felt I was destined to become President.  When no career advancement support was offered beyond middle management, I left to start my own firm – PowHERhouse in 2000.  At that time, I didn’t know exactly what PowHERhouse was.  I only knew my role was to build strong women who lead by supporting women to work and live in their highest state of awesomeness – to be EPIC!

Fast-forward to today… 17 years later and 4 years into our PowHERhouse Media brand.  I’m eager to meet Canadian women who are up to EPIC work in the world… who are ready to turn up their EPIC!  Because as a mentor once said, “If you don’t know if you have power and potential, how can you unleash it?” The starting point then – is seeing what is possible.  Having someone recognize it, sometimes before we even recognize it in ourselves.

Be Epic

In my mid-20’s, I remember sitting in a conference with a room full of stockbrokers (Investment Advisors).  We were listening to a presentation by a Human Performance Psychologist from California.  At one point in the presentation, he walked right up to me and said, “You – young lady – [Trust me, there were very few women in the room.] YOU are a natural born leader.

My mouth dropped open, but inside I was beaming.  HE SAW ME!  He saw ALL OF ME… Who I could become!  Something sparked in me that day, starting with his public recognition of my potential.  It encouraged me to see the possibility, what I was destined for if I was open to it.

And now, almost 25 years later, as a leader in women’s development through media, I do the same.

I work with PowHERhouses across Canada, women who are up to EPIC work in the world – from former Olympians to politicians, from professional executives to successful, brave entrepreneurs.  In our work together, my role is to recognize their greatness and publicly celebrate it!

No matter which industry, sector, province, or background, we use these 4 Steps to Turn Up Your EPIC.  They are easy to remember because they spell the word ‘EPIC’:

  1. E is for ENERGY:  It starts and ends with our energy.

Every moment, every interaction, people are attracted to us by our energy.  Your IT quality allows you to stand out, get noticed and be memorable.  IT is your energy.  Yet so many of us take it for granted.  Think about it:  The most powHERful and positively influential women we admire – like Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Sophie Trudeau – attract and engage us with their energy, vibrancy, magnetism.  They keep themselves strong so they can be strong for others.

So where do we start to build and maximize our energy?  We start with what I call the Practice of PowHERful Living, because it is a Practice.  Which leads me to #2…

2.  P is for Practice.  How would I kick off your Practice?  I’d start here:

  • Energy in = energy out;
  • Drink your water;
  • MOVE – every day!

When I was in my 20’s and 30’s and even into my 40’s, I competed in the sport of natural bodybuilding.  As an athlete and competitor, I would pick a goal date – a contest date – commit to it, and together with my competitive coach, develop a strategy to ensure my success.  Week by week (and it would typically take me anywhere from 16-20 weeks to prepare for a show), we’d take action and put our strategy into Practice.  Consistent, daily Practice.

Day-by-day, workout-by-workout, meal-by-meal, I did what I needed to do to ensure that my goal, my vision for the stage, became my reality.  No guesswork.  Just commitment and conviction to the Practice – the daily Practice I knew that would take me successfully to the stage.

Do we do this with business goals?  leadership goals? life goals?

We should.  I continue to preach this winning athletic performance strategy:  WHO we are, HOW we show up, and WHAT we do every day that either takes us closer to our goals or further away.  How committed are we?  Preparation meets opportunity.  But, are we prepared?

Do our daily actions demonstrate what we say we want?

3.  I is for Integration.  So how do we build a powerful daily Practice?  Focus.  Bull’s eye laser focus.  Women waste a whole lot of time and energy being “busy“.  Time and energy – two of our most precious resources.  We need to ensure they are directed and re-directed to our greatest good.  Directed and re-directed, dailyDo our daily actions reflect what we say we want?  What we say we’re ready for?

If there was a reality TV show about your life, would it be obvious from your actions what you say your priorities are.

Role model lead by example.  They practice what they preach.  Quite literally, they Practice it, daily.  Don’t tell me what you believe – show me!

4.  C is for Communicate.  Our fourth and final step.   Role modelling demonstrates possibility.  “If she can do it, maybe I can too!”  Role modelling creates a ripple… a powerful ripple of positive change, a powerful ripple of compounding impact.  But only as our role models become known, seen, and heard.  Effective communication is a must – sharing our stories, lessons learned, and best practices.  It inspires others to do the same.

As women see evidence of what is possible, we lift ourselves and each other up – higher – and move forward – faster – to our fullest potential!

That’s what PowHERhouse is all about and why we’re here!

It’s so much easier to find the guts and courage to push past our comfort zone into our growth zone when we know that we have the support of a powerful posse of strong women behind us.  We’re ready to help YOU reach your EPIC potential.  We’re ready and waiting to celebrate YOU, powHERful Canadian PowHERhouses!

Key Takeaways:

Possibility:  EPIC Possibility is demonstrated by positive role models… only then do we grasp that, ‘Hey, this IS possible!  If she can do it, maybe I can too!’

Potential:  Sometimes we don’t recognize our ultimate potential until someone sees it in us first.

PowHER:  Our true power lies in our energy, our IT quality.  And it is our daily Practice that either builds and breeds our powHER or snuffs it out.
